Dar Zaman is a responsible organisation and we take our social responsibility seriously. We’re mindful that we are blessed with being able to make a living thanks to the wonders of the magical Marrakech medina and the hospitable local people who live here and who add to the natural charm.
To this end we have selected a local charity to support as a way of giving back to the local community of which we form part.
Atfalouna-Marrakech is a local charity that supports several hundred street children and orphans, providing tuition, a safe place to hang out, activities to keep the children off the streets, and also food and accommodation for up to 20 children in their shelter home in Doudiate.
Each evening at the Atfalouna centre, staff provide both informal and formal tuition to help the children catch up and re-integrate into the main schooling system.
The children participate in enrichment activities (visits to monuments, theater, singing, civic and religious) and sports (swimming, football). They have a music teacher and an annual festival.
During holidays, the children are taken away for a vacation, sometimes for the first time in their lives.
Read an interview with Hakim Serrakh, a former Atfalouna coordinator, as he explains in English the work of Atfalouna.
For anyone who would like to know more, donate or get involved with Atfalouna, please contact us. We’ll be happy to take you to visit the children’s centre when you’re in Marrakech.
If you have space in your suitcase on the flight to Marrakech, let us know beforehand and we can ask Atfalouna what they are most in need of at that time (for example warm clothes for children and teenagers for the upcoming winter evenings).
